Take your Cockatoo to work with you

Patrick at work

This is my oldest son at work, he is a metal worker. Being autistic he is very good at the routine work on the machine and yesterday Mr. Swiss (in the background) and I had the pleasure of visiting him at his work place. Now can you see it, just on the left, yes - a cockatoo. I had heard about Otto (the name of the bird). He belongs to my son’s boss and is always present in the factory. When we arrived yesterday the first thing I saw was a large cage with a cockatoo on the way to my son’s department, so of course I took a few photographs.

When Otto saw me, it was time for a show and he climbed up the bars of the cage to show his wonderful headdress. Later he left the cage and spent most of the time on his master’s shoulder. It was quite amusing to see a cockatoo in the middle of a machine park, but it is daily life for Otto. He is not so keen on fast movements, but otherwise a very friendly bird. Even my son allowed Otto to sit on his shoulder.

I was surprised that my son had no fear of the bird, but Otto is use to the presence of humans. Otto is now 28 years old. I did not actually see Otto fly, but he can, and now and again did some flapping exercises with this wings to keep fit probably. One last look at Otto preening his feathers.

  1. Otto is a handsome bird, but what an odd place for a cockatoo to feel at home in!!

  2. He usually sits on his owners shoulder. He belongs to the guy that has now taken over the company where my son works, a very nice person. We visited the factory to meet him. My son had told us about the Cockatoo and now we met him. He arrives at the factory every day, just part of the staff now. I was so happy to see that my son was enjoying the company. It was also good to see how well my son works with the machines.
