Daily Prompt: Ear Worm

Write whatever you normally write about, and weave in a book quote, film quote, or song lyric that’s been sticking with you this week.

I normally write about what the WordPress Daily prompt team suggest to write about. This week it was the Christmas week, a little inappropriate to write all about Christmas with all the trimmings, so let’s have a jolly happy go lucky quote from “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens

You are fettered," said Scrooge, trembling. "Tell me why?"
"I wear the chain I forged in life," replied the Ghost. "I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on of my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it.”

Which is really a cheerful quote - no let’s leave it to Scrooge to meet his fate with the 3 ghosts and his happy ending.

A film quote? Mr. Swiss are doing a re—run at home of the film series Fargo and so I found a nice little quote “There are no saints in the animal kingdom. Only breakfast and dinner.” - No, not so good. You lot are never satisfied. Song lyrics are in three languages at my place, so let’s leave it, What a miserable prompt this is. On the other hand I write about a lot of things, but not so normal.

Harold and his hens

On the other hand, let’s talk about food. That has been sticking with me all week, since around before Christmas because I had to make sure I had enough in the kitchen to feed a family of three during the Christmas holidays. The shops closed on 24th December in the afternoon and remained shut until 26th December when they decided to open for one day, only to close again on 27th December but we survived. Thanks to a careful logistic planning by Mr. Swiss and Mrs. Angloswiss the cupboard was not bare and we ate the remainders in the evening, Phew! now that is behind us all, or is it? No, of course not, the jolly eating carousel with a famine threat hovering in the background is upon us again and we have to survive from New Years Eve until 4th January, with on day in between for buying what we forgot, or may have run out of.

I ran out of ideas of what to cook and Mr. Swiss did not  really have any, the food had to be fresh and the freezer was full. It was then I had an idea.

“Where are you going with the axe?” asked Mr. Swiss

“I thought I could cook a nice fresh turkey for the new year.”

“with an axe?”

“There is a farm in the next village and they have turkeys running around. I am sure that would not miss one.”

“You cannot just kill a turkey, you will have to ask the farmer.”

“I could do it when he isn’t looking.”

An argument followed and so we forgot about the whole thing. I quite like turkey, but they are just a little too large for our family I suppose.

“I could perhaps go to the chicken farm across the road”

“Forget it” and so the conversation came to an end. I am still wondering what to serve and I would so like some fresh meat. Unfortunately the cows are still in the barn throughout the Winter. Perhaps the next prompt might give me an idea.

WordPress Daily Prompt: A Brand New You, Effective Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the first day of a brand new year. Tomorrow you get to become anyone in the world that you wish. Who are you? You can choose to by anyone, alive today or someone gone long ago. If you decide to stay “you” share your rationale.

Photographers, artists, poets: show us METAMORPHOSIS.

My new action photo, taken in the kitchen by No. 2 son and now in a happy new year frame of mind. Actually Mr. Swiss was on the edge of the photo, but he wishes to remain anonymous.

OK fellow victims in the blogging sense of the word, we now have a year of blogs behind us, searching every day for something new and imposing to write for a daily prompt. Did we find it – of course we did. Although as you all may know, I am still searching for a mentor, a contract, a prize to crown my success in Word Press. Perhaps this is the positive side of things, if I had achieved my deserved recognition I may no longer be here, moving on to pastures of 50 shades of anything that would pay and recognise my talents and I might would be missed.

So now you know who I want to be tomorrow, The Blogger. In the meanwhile I will continue my blogging episodes wrapping you all in thoughts “what will she write next”. If you are one of my disciples, followers, I am sure you have all set your alarm clocks to register the time of the e-mail arrival informing that she has done it again, waiting impatiently for the notification of my new words of blog wisdom.

Will I metamorphise tonight? Will I retire to my bed and awake tomorrow morning fixed on my back in bed, no longer being able to rise? Memories of Gregor Samsa come to my mind in Franz Kafka book Metamorposis when he awoke one morning changed into a beetle-like creature complete with six legs. He had a problem to turn as his back had become an armoured heavy surface during the night. Gradually he was ignored by his family and left to dwindle away – who needs a humanoid beetle in the family. No-one wanted him; he was not like the others.

There is actually no-one I would like to become, I am unique, I, me and myself. If I was someone else, who would tend to the needs of my felines, they would sit impatiently waiting for a dish to be filled with tuna fish, or vitamin rich pellets and nothing arrives. Who would spend many happy hours in the kitchen composing a new five star menu for my tribe, although Mr. Swiss can make a very good apple flan. He is also quite professional with the use of the vacuum cleaner and his ironing talents are perfect. Am I slowly becoming superfluous? Mr. Swiss and I have braved many New Years together, something like 46, so what could possibly happen?

And now I will take my leave and once again wish you all the best for the new year, may it be filled with blogging inspiration and if you remain as you are until tomorrow, then the magic WordPress daily prompt spell will again be overcome.

WordPress Daily Prompt: Stroke of Midnight

Where were you last night when 2012 turned into 2013? Is that where you'd wanted to be?

4 leaf clover

“What’s the time?”

“Another hour to go why?”

“Was just wondering.”

My book was weighing heavy in my hands, so I had another look at the television. With over two hundred channels in about ten different languages, you would think there would be something worth watching, especially when you only had an hour to go to midnight. Another new year: and this time with a thirteen at the end. I don’t like the idea of thirteens on the end. On the other hand I do not think my mum had a choice when she was born in 1913.

It was then that Mr. Swiss (my man) decided it was time to try again on another station. I raised my head from my book, perhaps hoping for something completely different. It did not even have to be english, any language as long as I understood it.

It was dark and cold outside and my three cats were all settled somewhere inside. Nera at the top of the cat play center to make sure everything was in view. You never know, there might be a faint hope of a serving of tuna fish. Tabby, her sort of twin sister (female cats are never serious about how many fathers are around when they decide to mate) was in her favourite walled in place on the carpet in the bathroom. OK, we do sometimes have problems manoevering to the right seat when nature calls, but the cats moved in and took over. Fluffy, the youngest, was curled up on the settee waiting for Mr. Swiss to sit in his accustomed place next to Fluffy.

Every now and again another firework exploded somewhere in the neighbourhood. Every feline attempt to take a walk on a dark night was out of the question. Nera did make try once or twice, but as soon as her sensitive feline ears picked up a loud “Bang” she retired again to her pole position. Tabby did not even bother.

Did my thoughts revert to the time some twenty-five years earlier when we were celebrating New Year at a get-together with friends?  Bringing our own champagne glasses to make sure there were enough available. Dressed up and ready for action: I was glad to be sitting in my own four walls, even if I did only have a book and television for entertainment.

And then Mr. Swiss made his decision and I found myself watching the story of the Swedish group Abba with supporting concert clips and showing how their private lives were functioning, or were not functioning, at the time of their fame. I was glad it was all in english as my foreign language talents do not extend to Scandinavia. This was interesting. I was never a big fan of Abba. I did remember when they first arrived on the scene after winning one of the European song contests with “Waterloo”.

Supplemented with my coca cola supply (which I am not really supposed to drink – diabetes) and a mouth full of crisps (potato chips or whatever) making a mess on the floor with the crumbs I even put my book on one side. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens was no competition for Abba. Tabby suddenly arrived on the scene in the living room and sat quite still next to my chair. She is a chip addict. She was looking at me with her big pleading cat eyes “What about me?”, so I tossed her a chip. She ate it, was satisfied with the evening snack and returned to the bathroom.

It seems that not all was gold that shone with Abba. Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog split up, as well as Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lingstad and by 1982 their career was more or less finished.

“It’s nearly midnight” I said to Mr. Swiss as the Abba programme was coming to a close.

“Yes” he answered, “from the sound of the church it is”.

The bells from the near bye town of Solothurn, from all the many surrounding villages, as well as our village, were all ringing in unison. Not exactly unison, just a mixture of ding dongs and bongs all over. The cats sunk lower in their nocturnal seats. They were probably thinking about covering their sensitive ears with their paws.

My thoughts wandered to the small bottle of champagne in the kitchen. I really do not like it so much. Gives me digestive problems, does not climb to my head it overtakes my head and it was half a minute to midnight.

“What do you think, do you want any champagne?” my other half asked.

“Not really” I answered.

“Shall we leave it?”

“Yes”

and so we saw the New year in together in the living room with three sleeping cats.

Where would I rather have been? To be quite honest I would rather have gone to bed at 11 o’clock, my usual bed time. It is only once a year that the New Year enters, so I managed to stay awake and see it through.
