Daily Prompt: Eat, drink and be merry

When I wrote this the first time on 1st November 2013 I proved that it was a hoax. You are welcome to do a re-read. It was not the last day on earth, even though the 1st November is All Souls Day, the day we celebrate the dead by partaking in visits to the cemetery and saying hello to the departed with a few flowers. The are all recovering from Halloween, which was the evening  before when they have a party. You have never been invited to their party? No, be glad, invitations are reserved for those that can only celebrate in the spirit and so their digestive organs are no longer necessary.

And now for something completely different on a happier note. Some may have noticed (I hope everyone noticed) that my No. 2 son had his civil marriage this week on Monday. Naturally it was accompanied by a meal in one of our restaurants in the town of Solothurn, Switzerland. I took the following photo from the window of the registry office which showed the restaurant on the opposite bank of the River Aar, known as Salzhaus (House of salt). It’s the white building on the extreme left of the photo on the river bank.

And here is another photo of my son and now daughter-in-law standing on the opposite bank of the River Aar with the restaurant behind them on the left. The registry office is opposite to where they are standing. Solothurn is a small market town and everything seems to revolve around the river.

We had a nice room to ourselves inside the restaurant (12 people + 1 baby in a pram that slept most of the time) and took an aperitif outside before the meal. It was a 4 course meal + amuse bouche to begin with and everything was perfect. The wonderful surprise was when the dessert was served. It looked very nice on the plates, but they made two special plates for the bride and bridegroom. It was not expected, the restaurant did it as their own idea which was very much appreciated by all. I suppose they often have wedding receptions. Anyhow I could not resist taking a photo of the desert. Roughly translated the words would mean “Congratulations on your wedding”.

So it was definitely not my last meal, but one to remember.
