West Ham United v Fulham - English Football (Roy Hodgson and the Swiss National Team)

I used to follow football quite a bit in the late 50's, early 60's and now and again I have a butchers to see what West Ham United are doing. One day I will do a blog about them, but for now let it be sufficient to say that my dad grew up with them and I carried on the tradition - although now and again made an excursion to Brisbane road where the O's (Leyton Orient) were playing.

I noticed they were today playing Fulham. I thought big deal as Fulham is not exactly world class and I think I vaguely remember a trip to their stadium many moons ago, and thought thank goodness I can have a look at the boats on the River Thames when the going got boring.
Now reading through the Internet I discovered something. I was only talking to Mr. Swiss a few days back after the Swiss National team's surprising defeat in England in a friendly game, about one of the best trainers the Swiss ever had, Roy Hodgson, and what ever happened to him. He came to Neuenburg Xamax in 1992 as their trainer, one of our good Swiss football teams, from Sweden. He could speak more or less good Swedish. He then took over the Swiss national team and quickly learnt German and French to be able to communicate with the team. He was the man that managed to put the national Swiss team in the World cup in America. Surprisingly they did not win it (well there were many Swiss that thought they would) but they did put up a good performance.

He left Switzerland after a few years for an Italian club (think it was Inter Milano) but as the Italians don't like their teams to loose at any time, he soon lost the job. Today I found his name as trainer for Fulham where he seemed to have arrived via Finnland (did he learn Finnish as well?). Surprising how things turn out sometimes. Someone wrote somewhere that Fulham could be the banana skin that West Ham might slide on. Unfortunately I cannot go to the match or watch it on tv. My dad told me on my last visit to England the prices charged these days for a visit to a league match are exorbitant, so if I was in England it might be a bit on the expensive side for me. I was wondering how a father with his son(s) could afford it these days. My dad also said in this day and age he would be too frightened to attend a football match in case he got mugged.

Anyhow may the best team win - West Ham of course.

Parrots, cats and first aid

The week is already through and I am not sure what I have been doing all week. I must have been busy and I didn't seem to have time to do things I should have done. Now let's see, yesterday I was at work all day, as usual. It was the day I had to fill up on the pepsi and mineral water (2 crates each one with 6 bottles). I usually buy a bit more on Thursday as we get double "cumulus" points in the Migros supermarket. Something to entice the housewives to buy more, which succeeds, and we get more money back at the end of two months. I suppose we are all slaves of the consuming society that we belong to.

Anyhow after work I had to stop in at the vets for a friend of mine. Her 10 Kg main coon cat has kidney problems, and as she lives on the other side of town I pick the stuff up for her that she needs. While I was at the vets the lady behind the counter had a telephone call so I had to wait. I had been waiting for this opportunity for some time and here is the reason why.

Deutsch: Die Woche ist schon durch und ich bin nicht ganz sicher, was ich die ganze Woche gemacht habe. Ich war warhrscheinlich sehr beschäftigt, zwar es scheint die Zeit war nicht da für Sachen zu erledigen was ich wollte. Wie war es jetzt - gestern war ich bei der Arbeit wie immer. Es war die Tag, wenn ich musste aufstocken mit unsere Vorrat an Pepsi und Mineralwasser (2x 6 Flaschen). Ich kaufe immer etwas mehr am Donnerstag, weil wir bekommen doppelte "cumulus" Punkte in der Migros supermarkt. Etwas die Hausfrauen zu locken mehr zu kaufen, was eigentlich erfolgreich ist, und nach 2 Monate bekommen wir etwas Geld zurück. Ich glaube wir sind aller Sklavinnen von unsere Konsumgesellschaft.

Jedoch, nach der Arbeit ich musste bei der Vet vorbei für meine Freundin. Ihre 10 Kg Maine Coon Katze hat Nierenprobleme, und weil sie am andere Seite von der Stadt wohnt, ich hole die Medikament und Futter für Sie ab. Während ich wartete, die Vetinärassistentin musste die Telefon nehmen. Ich habe schon lange auf diese Gelegenheit gewartet für einige Zeit und hier ist der Grund warum.

This is a blue front Amazon parrot according to the information the vet's assistant gave me. He lives in the vets waiting room and has always lived there. The girl told me he is now 15 years old, but with an expected life of near on 50 years he will be there for some time. I always wanted to take his photo. He can talk, and often has a conversation with himself in his corner in Swiss German of course.

Deutsch: Es ist ein Amazon blau Papagei gemäss die Information die Vetinärassistentin mich gab. Er wohnt in die Wartesaal von die Vet und hat immer da gewohnt. Die Assistentin sagte mich, dass er jezte 15 Jahre alt ist, aber mit ein Lebenserwartung von ungefähr 50 Jahren er wird da sein für einige zeit. Ich wollte diese Photo immer machen. Er kann sprechen und führt oft ein Selbstgespräch in seine Ecke, in Schwiiizer tüütsch natürlich.

What is this you may be thinking. Yesterday was our monthly meeting at the first aid society and we had a practice. If you came across a motor bike accident and the driver is laying unconscious or not on the ground you have to help. The idea was how to remove the helmet without causing any further damage and to put the patient in a safe place until help came. Some were practicing, some watching and me, I was taking the photos for the next report on our web site. I will have to piece the photos together over the week-end and send them to one of my colleagues who writes the text. I could write the text as well, but the site is in German and although I post my feeble attempts on my own private blog, I don't think it would be a good idea to put them on the web site as it might cause a bit of confusion.

Deutsch: Was ist das, denkt Ihr veilleicht. Gestern war unsere Monatstreff bein die Samariter und wir haben geübt. Wenn mann ein Töffunfall begegnet und die Fahrer liegt bewusstlos oder vielleicht auch nicht auf dem Boden, denn muss man helfen. Die Idee war wie man die Helm entfernt ohne das weitere Schaden entsteht und die Patient wird bewegt zu eine sicheren Ort bit Hilfe kommt. Einige haben geübt, einige schaut zu und ich, ich habe Fotos gemacht für die nächste Reportage auf unsere Website. Ich werde die Photos zusammenstellen am Wochende und schicke sie an meine Kollegin. Sie schreibt der Text dazu. Ich könnte die Text schreibe, aber die Site ist auf deutsch und zwar ich schreibe meine schwache Deutsch auf meine Blog, ich glaube nicht das es ein gute Idee war sie aufzunehmen auf die Website, weil es könnte etwas konfus werden.

The cats - they are fine. Fluffy is walking around as if he owned the place since I posted his photo on picture perfect and Tabby and Nera are doing their best to ignore him. Oh and Garfield the ginger tom from round the corner looks a bit wet at the moment as Mr. Swiss managed to empty a jug of water over him this afternoon while he was sleeping on one of our chairs outside.

Deutsch: Die Katzen - es geht sie gut. Fluffy lauft um als ob ihn alles gehört seit ich seine Foto auf Picture Perfect verloffentlicht und Tabby und Nera versuchen ihn zu ignorieren. Oh und Garfield, der Kater von um die Ecke scheint etwas nass zu sein am Moment. Mein man könnte ein Krug Wasser ihn über der Köpf leeren heute Nachmittag währen er schlief auf eine von unseren Stühle draussen.

What does a cat cost? Was Kostet ein Katz?

Wednesday evening and it was cat Tuna fish evening so they were all happy. Here you see how it looks when they are more or less finished. Prompted by the remark that cats cost a fortune these days, it is almost true. At the back left and right we have Hills Science plan food with chicken vetinary formulated.

Deutsch: Mittwoch Abend und es war Katze Thonfischabend, so sie sind alle zufrieden. Hier sieht man wie es aussieht wenn sie mehr oder weniger fertig sind. Mit der Anmerkung das Katzen ein Vermögen kosten heute, es ist fast wahr. Hinten links und rechts haben wir Hills Science Plan Futter mit Huhn, vertinarish zusammengestellt.

What this actually means I don't know, all I know is that 10 Kilo of this food (I bought a new pack today) costs ninety swiss francs. Although this does sound very expensive, for my 3 cats it lasts about 4-5 weeks, which works out per day is not so much. Basically I only give my cats this food. They do quite well on it (Nera too well) and they eat it. In Summer it stays quite fresh. They meaty stuff does attract the flies if it gets hot, but this doesn't. The only thing this food attracts is snails - they seem to like it.

Deutsch: Was das eigentlich bedeutet, weiss ich nicht. Ich weiss nur das 10 Kilos von diese Futter kostet neunzig Schweizer Franken (Ich kaufte ein neue Sack heute). Es tönt sehr teuer, aber für meine 3 Katzen ist es genug für 4-5 Wochen. Sie gedeihen mit diese Futter (Nera zu gut) und sie essen es. In Sommer es bleibt frisch. Die Buchsen Futter zieht die Fliegen an in heissen Wetter, aber diese Futter nicht. Nur zieht es die Schnecken an, sie haben es gern.

The food at the front on the right side is so-called Hairball control, cost also ninety Swiss Francs, but this is only five kilo. I buy this basically for Fluffy. He is a Selkirk Rex cat and his fur is similar to cotton wool. Being a clean cat, as most are, he has a good lick now and again and a lot of the fur disappears into his tummy. Cats have a clear out to get rid of the fur balls that form - it is in their nature. The problem with Fluffy is that his fur is so fein that he has indigestion because of it (the words of the vet), so he suggested hairball food as this dissolves the hairs that he swallows. It does help, but naturally all 3 cats stick their noses into it at one time or another. There again I have to buy a bag every 4-5 weeks.

Deutsch: Die Futter an die rechten Seite vorn ist sogenannte Hairball Kontrol, kostet auch neunzig Schweizer Franken, aber ist nur fünf Kilo. Ich kauf es grundsatzlich für Fluffy. Er is ein Selkir Rex Katze und seine pelz is ähnlich Watte. Er ist ein sauberer Katz, wie die meisten, und schlecht seine Pelt ab und zu. Viel Haare verschwinden in seine Bauchlein. Katze muss aufräumen von Zeit zur Zeit und die Pelzballen verschwinden lassen. Problem mit Fluffy ist das die Haare sind so fein das er ein Magenverstimmung kriegt (Vetinäre Wörter) und er hat vorgeschlagen Hairball Futter, weil es löst die Haare auf. Es hilft, aber natürlich alle 3 Kater stecken Ihre Nasen in diese Futter von Zeit zur Zeit. Hier auch muss ich ein Sack kaufen nach 4-5 Wochen.

For drinking purposes they only get water. You should not really give milk to a cat unless it is the special cat milk, and it is only Fluffy that drinks milk at home.

Deutsch: Zum trinken bekommen sie nur Wasser. Man sollte Milch nicht an eine Katze geben, nur wenn es Katzenmilch ist, und bei uns ist es nur Fluffy das Milch trinkt.

The most expensive things about cats are visits to the vets. Here you can see Nera having her hair cut. She is under sedation. Nera is not a cat that you can do anything with like this unless she is put to sleep. I remember once when she had her normal jabs and I was holding her for the vet. She turned her head and tried to bite through my hand, which resulted in a visit to the doctors for me to have a tetanus injection. When Fluffy had his accident and was most probably hit by a car, he became blind. There was nothing the vet could do for him, but he needed care and treatment after the accident. He had water in the lungs and lost all his fur on his tummy and inside his legs. Cost after a weekly stay at the vets - about two and a half thousand Swiss Francs. There is no pet sickness insurance available in Switzerland. Nera managed to swallow 25 cms of string once which blocked her digestive system - about eight hundred Swiss Francs. Tabby is the cheapest up to now. She had a small problem with conjuntivitus once (eye inflammation), but with ointment and treatment for about one hundred francs he was cured. The annual injections also cost about 3-400 francs per year. So now you know what the little "darlings" cost. I am not really sure what are cheaper, my two sons or the cats.

Deutsch: Die Teuerste von die Katze sind die Besuche zu Vet. Hier sieht man Nera wenn sie die Haarschitt hätte. Sie ist unter Anaesthesie. Nera ist nicht ein Katze das man machen kann was er will mit sie, wenn sie nicht schlaft. Ich erinnere mich wenn sie einmal die normale Spritze hat und ich musste sie festhalten. Sie hat Ihre Kopf gedreht und versuchte mein Hand durzubeissen. Ich musste nachher zum Arzt für ein Tetanus Impfung. Wenn Fluffy hat seine Unfall, wahrscheinlich von ein Auto angefahren, er wurde Blind. Er hat Wasser an die Lunge und verlor die Haare an seine Bauch und die Innenseite von die Beine. Kosten für ein Woche aufenthalt being Vetinär - ungefahr zweitausandfünfhundert Schweizer France. Es gibt keine Tier Krankenversicherung in der Schweiz. Nera hat einmal 25 cm Schnurr geschlucht was Ihre Darmtracht blokierte - etwa achthundert Schweizerfranken. Tabby ist die billigste bis jetzt. Sie hat einmal eine Auge Inflammation, aber mit Salbe und Behandlung war sie kuriert (100 Schweizer Franken). Die järliche Impfungen kosten für alle 3 etwa 3-400 Franken per Jahr. So jetzt weiss man was die "Schätzen" kosten. Ich weiss nicht wer billiger ist, meine 2 Söhne oder die Katzen.

A Busy Monday

Things never seem to turn out the way you plan them. The week got off to quite a good start. I arrived at work to be greeted by the barking of a dog. Now it is not very often that you have a dog barking in an office, but we are very animal friendly where I work. I have 3 cats, a friend of mine has a 10 Kg Main Coon cat at home and my boss has two dogs at home and, and, and. I think if I counted all the pet owners in the company where I work it would be at least half of the people working there. Another colleague has a dog, Taps. I think you may have met him before. Now and again he cannot be left alone at home - so he arrives in the office on Monday morning.

Deutsch: Sachen sind nie so wie sie sollte sein oder wie man sie plant. Die Wocheanfang war gut. Ich kam an in Büro zu der Begrüssungs bellen von ein Hund. Es ist nicht sehr oft das ein Hund bellt in ein büro, aber wir sind sehr Tierfreundlich in unserem Büro. Ich habe 3 Katzen, eine Kollegin hat ein 10 KG Main Coon Katze zu Hause und mein Chef hat 2 Hünde und, und, und. Ich denke, wenn ich alle Tierbesitzer zählen in die Firma wo ich arbeite, es war sicher die Hälfte von aller. Noch ein Kollegin hat ein Hund, Taps. Ich glaube Ihr habt ihn schon kennengelernt. Ab und zu kann er nicht zu Hause bleiben alleine - und so er kommt in Büro am Montag morgen.

He naturally has to bring his toys with him to make sure he doesn't get home sick. Note the patriotic blanket with the Swiss cross. After all he is a Swiss born and bred short haired retriever, although he does not retrieve very much as he usually carries it all aound in his mouth. He is quite well behaved, hardly ever barks and the only noise you really hear is when he drinks water which sounds like a waterfall falling onto the rocks.

Deutsch: Er bringt natürlich seine Spielzeug mit ihn, um sicher zu sein, das er nicht Heimweh bekommt. Merkt die patriotische Decke mit die Schweizerkreuz. Er ist doch in der Schweiz geboren und gezuchtet, ein Kurhaar Retriever, zwar er holt nicht so viel, weil er gewöhnlicherweise trägt seine Sachen in dem Mund. Er ist gut erzogen, bellt fast nie und die einzige Lärm is wenn er trinkt Wasser - tönt wie das Platschen von ein Wasserfall auf Steine.

And now for something different. Another colleague was again in the snow and ice in the mountains at the week-end - near St. Moritz in the Kanton of Grisons. He once sent some wonderful photos of the Bernese Overland in snow, so this time I got a photo of Piz Nair (Piz is the word for peak in Romanisch - the strange language spoken in the region). He took the photo with his mobile telephone.

Deutsch: Und jetzt für etwas ganz anders. Noch ein Kollege war wieder in die Schnee und Eis in die Berge am Wochende - in der Nähe von St. Moritz in Kanton Graubünden. Er hätte einmal so wunderschöne Fotos von die Bernerüberland geschickt, und jetzt habe ich ein schöne Foto von Piz Nair bekommen (Piz ist romantsch für Bergspitz ich glaube - Romantsch spricht man in diese Gegend). Er hat das Foto mit seine Händy aufgenommen.

When I arrived home in the evening I had a surprise. There was a card from my colleagues in the first aid group not to forget the committee meeting on 18.02.2008. I was surprised as I did not know anything about this, and realised that I was a VIP as I had to do the budget for this year with the boss and had not prepared anything. A quick phone call and it seems that the last time when I was a death's door with flu (well I felt like it), they all went to the local restaurant for a drink or two (or three or perhaps four) and on the way home decided to have a meeting on 18th before our annual general meeting, but forgot to tell me. I got ready what I could, and went to the meeting, but left again after 2 hours, as I had planned my evening in another way. I had some washing to do and the East Enders was on the TV, there was just no time left for a blog. So that was Monday. Tuesday morning I dragged myself into the kitchen for something to eat for breakfast and Nera, my big fat black cat, was waiting for me on the kitchen tiles.

Deutsch: Wenn ich ankam zu Hause am Abend, ich hätte ein Überraschung. Es war ein Postkarte von meine Samariterkollege, dass ich ja nicht vergisse unsere Vorstands Sitzung am 18.02.2008. Ich war überrascht, weil ich wüsste nichts und da ich ein VIP bin wegen die Besprechung mit unsere Chef für die Budget für diese Jahr, müsste ich eigentlich Sache vorbereiten. Ein schenell Telephonat und es scheint das wenn ich war Totkrank in Januar (also es kommte mich so vor) war ich nicht dabei. Die andere war in Restaurant gegangen für ein Trink (oder 2, 3, vielleicht sogar mehr) und bevore sie zu Hause ging entschied für ein Sitzung am 18. Februar. Ich machte mich auf dem Weg mit die Unterlage was ich hätte aber nach 2 Stunde war wieder zu Hause. Ich müsste mit mein Waschmaschine spielen, und schliesslich war die East Enders am Britische Fernsehen - ich hätte einfach kein Zeit mehr für einen Blog. Das was Montag. Dienstag morgen schleppte ich mich in die Küche für etwas zu essen für meine Morgenessen und Nera, meine grosse dicke schwarze Katze wartet auf mich in die Küche.

Sunday with nothing to do - Sonntag und nichts zu tun

Sometimes I think Sunday is a bit boring. The excitement of Saturday shopping, cooking, cleaning is missing. The weekdays at work, feeling that life has a purpose in delivering goods all over the world and having happy customers. Going shopping in between and making sure that 3 cats and a Mr. are getting on ok. This is all missing on Sunday. On Sunday you don't have to do anything really, but you can if your want to. Anyone that believes anything I have written up to now has been had. Today was quiet, nothing really happened. I could catch up on sorting some stuff out on the computer. The only bit of excitement I had was this.

Deutsch: Manchmal ich glaube, das Sontag ist etwas langweilig. Die Samstageinkauf, kochen und putzen von Samstag fehlt. Die Wochentage an die Arbeit, wenn man ein Gefühl hat, dass das Leben ein Zweck hat , wenn man Warenlieferungen in die ganze Welt macht und glücklicher Kundschaft. hat in Geschäft. Einkaufen gehen und ein gutes Gefühl das 3 Katzen und ein Eheman sind gut versorgt zu hause. Das vermisst man am Sonntag. An Sonntag muss man nichts machen eigentlich, nur wenn man will. Wenn jemand das glaubt was ich schrieb bis jetzt, denn muss ich sagen sie sind hereingefallen. Heute war ruhig, nichts ist eigentlich passiert. Ich könnte nachholen, Sachen auf die Computer zu ordnen. Das einzige Aufregung war dies.

Now who do we have here sleeping on my Oleander which has now been squashed flat to the earth. I call him Garfield, as I do not really know what his real name is. He has been terrorising the cat world where I live for the past couple of months. My cats just run in when they see him coming and are lucky when he is not chasing them hard on their heels (sorry I mean paws). I am bit disappointed in my cats as I expected that they would win the fight for their territory, after all they are 3 and this red one is only one. The only cat in the area that can chase him away is Bobinette next door, although Bobinette has also chased my cats away in the past. My 3 and Bobinette seem to have now come to agreement, they keep out of her territory and she stays away from ours, although now and again Bobinette is seeing sprinting past, but it is not to be taken seriously. Actually I think my 3 cats are glad to have Bobinette around. This week-end I was looking after Bobinette as her humans were away, so she was confined to her home.

Deutsch: Wer schlaft hier auf meine Oeleander, was jetzt platt gedruckt ist auf die Erde. Ich nenne ihn Garfield, weil ich eigentlich nicht weiss wie er wirklich heiss. Er hat die Katzenwelt in der Nachbarschaft terrorisiert über die letzter paar Monate. Meine Katzen laufen weg, wenn sie ihn sehen und kann froh sein, wenn er sie nicht verfolgt. Ich bin etwas enttäuscht in meine Katzen, weil ich erwartete das sie die Kampf gewinnen würde für Ihrer Gebiet, schliesslich sind sie 3 Katzen gegen einer. Die einzige Katze, die diese Katze wegjagt ist Bobinnette, die Nachbars Katze. Bobinette hat auch meine 3 katzen weggejagt in die Vergangenheit aber sie haben sich jetzt geeinigt. Sie bleiben weg von Bobinettegebiet und sie lasst meine Katzen in Ruhe. Ab und zu springt Bobinette vorbei, aber dass ist nicht Ernst zu nahmen. Ich glaube meine 3 sind jetzt froh dass Bobinette da ist , wegen der Fremde. Diese Wochenende musste ich zu Bobinette schauen, weil Ihre Menschen fort war, so sie ist zu hause geblieben.

We have come to the conclusion that Garfield is a male cat that has definitely never seen the inside of a vet's operating theater unfortunately. It seems that my oleander is his favourite sleeping place and I don't think this plant has a big chance to make it through until Spring. They are sensitive to cold temperatures, so he is keeping it nice and warm, but I have a feeling it has now been squashed to death. What did my cats do whilst Garfield took our garden over.

Deutsch: Wir sind sicher, dass Garfield is ein männliches Wesen und hat leider wahrscheinlich nie die Operationstisch von ein Vetinär gesehen bis jetzt. Es scheint, das meine Oleander seine Lieblingsschlafplatz ist und ich glaube diese Pflanze hat nicht ein gute Chance die Frühling zu begrüssen. Oleander haben nicht gerne kälte und es bleibt schön warm unter die Körper von Garfield, aber ich habe das Gefühl, dass es jetzt zu Tot gedruckt ist. Also, was hat meine Katzen gemacht während Garfield die Garten übernahm?

Tabby retired to the bathroom (floor heating) and blocked a smooth run to the toilet. In our place you have to be careful where you go, you might fall over a cat on the way.

Deutsch: Tabby hat sich zurückgezogen in Badzimmer (Bodenheizung) und blockiert ein einfache Lauf zu der Toilette. In unsere Wohnung muss man aufpassen wo man hingeht, es kann sein dass ein katz in Weg ist.

Fluffy decided to make himself comfortable on the top level of her cat "play" center and 2 minutes after this photo was taken he was already fast asleep. And Nera?

Deutsch: Fluffy entschloss sich bequem zu machen an die oberste Teil von die Katzenbaum und 2 Minuten nachdem diese Foto gemacht war, war er schon in tiefste Katzenschlaf. Und Nera?

Well, the other cats said she decided she would stand guard in case Garfield attempted an ambush inside, but I think she was sleeping on the job.

Deutsch: Die andere Katzen hat gesagt, das Nera würde Wache stehen im Fall das Garfield ein Überfall plannt, aber ich glaube sie hat auf die Arbeit geschlafen.

And that was another "normal" Sunday at home.
Deutsch: Und das war noch eine "normale" Sonntag zu Hause.
