Saturday in town - Samstag in der Stadt

Me

Saturday was one of those nice warmer days, the sun was shining and after our usual shopping in the local supermarket, Mr. Swiss and I went into town. I had to have a small repair job on my glasses at the opticians and so we decided to make the most of the good weather. We eventually found a restaurant which already had the chairs and tables outside. On the one hand I am not so photogenic any more and on the other hand - who cares - at my age it doesn't really matter any more. I had to laugh when my husband ordered two coffees, one decaffeinated. The waitress brought them and in a friendly way said "the decaffeinated must be for you" meaning me. Do I really look decaffeinated. I could not be bothered to explain that I just prefer the taste.

Friedhofplatz

The square where we were sitting is known as the "Friedhofplatz" translated - cemetery square. Perhaps a strange name, but many many years ago when the Romans did their conquering bit in the town of Solothurn, this square was a cemetery. It is better not to start building on it or trying to renovate the fundaments of the houses, you are bound to find one or two skeletons somewhere.

Vigierhof, Solothurn

We then walked through town to the Vigierhof. Now this area was for many years abandoned. Old houses, falling apart and the streets not looking much better. It belongs to the family Von Vigier. Von Vigier was a rich Swiss bloke that moved over to London and what did he do there, like most Swiss, he had his own Bank. Although he has died in the meanwhile he still has his Summer house in Solothurn. Eventually after many complaints, he invested some of his hard earned money into this area and the result is excellent. It is a square with a few shops and restaurants. Pleasant to sit there when the summer months arrive.

Here is a view of one of the top floor balconies in the renovated houses.

Restaurant Turk, Solothurn

We then walked past the Restaurant Turk. This restaurant has always been in the town, since I can remember. It just belongs here. We have a Turkish population, but I think the restaurant was here before.

Market, Solothurn

Eventually we walked over the market place on the way to the car. Saturday mornings there are stalls everywhere and now that Spring is on its way (I hope) the flower sellers are back again.
