Daily Prompt: Festivus for the rest of us

You have been named supreme ruler of the universe. Your first order of business is creating and instituting a holiday or festival in your honor. What day of the year is your holiday? What special events will take place? Describe YOU DAY in as great a detail as you can muster: the special foods we’ll consume, the decorations we’ll use…everything.

Nothing new, I have been supreme ruler of my universe for many years.

“What did you say Mr. Swiss? In my dreams? Ok we will discuss it when this prompt has been written, Yes, it’s my blog and my dream and every day is a golden oldie holiday for I, me and myself.

It was then I saw strange things happening in my garden this morning.

Blackbird in flight

There was a blackbird in my garden so everyone clap hands as it is not every day I manage to take an action photo of a bird in flight. Actually it was more luck than judgement. I had been observing this particular female blackbird for some time as she had picked a rather large hole in my garden in a flower bed. What was she doing there? I am the supreme ruler of everything and no blackbird pecks holes in my garden.

“You might be a supreme ruler of your blog, but I am supreme ruler of my future family and am collecting material for my future nest, of which I will be the supreme mother.”

I was taken aback, another talking creature in my garden. And then she flew into my garden.

“What do you think you are doing pecking at my lawn?”

“Blerrr, ummm, frrrr whee” was the answer. It must have been bird talk.

“It is not bird talk Mrs. Human, but my beak is stuffed full of roots and stalks for building at the moment, and not for talking. Tweet, tweet” and she continued.

“Leave her Mrs. Human” said my overgrown caterpillar in the background. She is just doing her job and might drop something on the way for me to eat. Mrs. Blackbird flew to a nearby tree, only to return to continue collecting dried stalks of grass.

Blackbird gathering material for nest

“I think the construction work is nearly finished” called a male blackbird from a tree, that should do the job. Now take a rest before laying the eggs. We will have enough to do filling the mouths of eternally hungry chicks.”

I seemed that Mr. Blackbird had decided to lay down the law.

“Typical man, hold your beak, I will decide when there is enough construction material collected, and since when do you bother about collecting worms and bugs for our offspring. You just sit around waiting for them to grow and show off to all the other blackbirds what a supreme father you are.”

After this Mr. Blackbird was quiet and said no more. Yes, even the female blackbirds have the last word.

Blackbird with nest material

“Over here Mrs. Blackbird, come and get it” said the owl sitting in the garden.

“Thanks owl” and she winged her way back to the building site with another beak full of straw.

Eventually she disappeared, probably attending to the next phase of the building work.

So don't talk to me about taking over the world and partying and giving orders. My day is every day when I see what is going on around me. We have enough rulers that celebrate themselves all the time with big ideas and I will celebrate when I see the little blackbirds making their first attempts at conquering the world by flying.
