WordPress Daily Prompt: Dulled

You encounter a mysterious man offering you a magic potion that, once sipped, will make one of your senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch) super sharp - but dull the others. Will you sip it, and if so, what sense do you choose?

For an extra challenge, link your response to this prompt

Senses dulled

“Mrs. Angloswiss?”

“Yes, that’s me, you want something from me?”

It is not every day that a complete stranger talks to me on the street.

“Yes, I was told you wrote a daily blog about feeling your senses, And now I have a proposition. I have a magic potion which will sharpen one of your senses, although I must admit the others will be dulled.”

The stranger, who was wearing a t-shirt with the words “I love WordPress Daily Prompt” handed me a card showing him to be “Mr. Super Sense” from WordPress. I must admit I am always honoured when WordPress show interest in the blogging efforts of my golden oldie brain.

“Thankyou Mr. Super Sense, but no interest. My senses are exactly as I want them to be.”

“You have no interest in a super nose, super ear, super touch, super sight or super taste. Imagine being able to smell things that no other can smell, you could hear a bee land on a flower. No need for a macro lens on your camera, your eye will do the job. Your taste buds will be super special sensitive and when you run your fingers through your cat’s fur you will feel every cell, every pore. I am offering you the chance of a life time.”

Now this bloke, whoever he is, was gradually getting on my nerves, but having some spare moments (my day is full of them) I decided to entertain him with a few facts.

“First of all, I do not need a super nose. Just take a look at the one I have, it is already a king sized, so not wanting to win the competition for the biggest nose in WordPress we will keep that sense as it is.

My hearing was never perfect, but I found that not hearing everything can be positive. There are just some things you are better no knowing in this life. If my friends are talking about me, then they are no longer my friends. On the other hand I might even talk about them behind their backs, nobody is perfect, so let’s leave my ears as they are. Did you notice I have no ear lobes? Mr. Swiss always says that is a trade mark of criminals, so I am already unique in that respect.

Now to my sight: I wear glasses and you find that with a super sight, these will no longer be necessary? But my glasses are part of me. I can change the style according to fashion. Mr. Swiss also wears glasses, we both wear glasses. Another problem would be seeing everything in detail. Do you really think I would like to see all details of a fly’s head, its multi vision eyes? I really would not want to see every bug and insect in my garden in detail. Imagine the problems I would have with cleaning the apartment. I have enough trouble ensuring that the vacuum cleaner sucks every dust corn from my floors. I would probably discover dirt in places that I never knew existed.

So no we come to taste. I enjoy my food the way I cook. I have been living with my taste buds the past 66 years and they work just fine for me. If my taste becomes more delicate than it already is, I do not think my food will be so enjoyable any more. Salty foods would taste like they were dragged from the sea, sweet would not be so ideal tasting sweeter (I am diabetic and already have a bad conscience when I use sugar), and imagine eating a salad with one of my special self-made salad sauces containing aromat, pepper, mustard, mayonnaise, wine vineagar and olive oil. That would knock me out with so much hyper taste.

The last one of your super offer is touch. Do you really think it would be an enjoyment to run my fingers through the silky fur of my three felines and feel every pore, every strand, every tic and every snail that they pick up in my garden? To notice every strange foreign body they might attract on their travels. It would not disturb my furry monsters, I am sure, but I do not think I would enjoy the feeling of giving them a tummy tickle, chin scratch and head stroke, realising what I might encounter.

There is another point I would like to make Mr. WordPress Super Sense. At my age all of my senses are now dulled to a point that it is sometimes quite comfortable. I am happy with my senses as they are and have been lucky in life to be able to keep them all working to my satisfaction. There are many people who are not so lucky, perhaps lost their sense of smell, being blind or deaf, nerve problems no longer being able to feel what they should, even taste buds no longer functioning. These are perhaps the people you should visit with you magic potion. I am quite happy to be as I am, although if you ever have a remedy for reducing the size of a nose, call in again. I might be interested.”

  1. I think I agree with you on most of those things. I, too, am happy for the most part with the senses I already have. The only exception being my near-vision. In the last 12 months I've started wearing glasses as small print and fine detail started becoming blurred. A sharpening back to 20/20 wouldn't be bad, but I'm not too bothered.

    1. The main cause for my glasses was the computer definitely. I can no longer be without my glasses. I have vario so can wear them for reading and ordinary. It would be impossible to read without.
