The Cat Walk - Der Katzenpfad

This is our cat Nera on top of the wardrobe, which is approximately 2 meters high. Both of my cats like to sleep up there or retire from the presence of humans. My blind cat Fluffy also used to join them before his accident. Now and again he finds the way up and then starts miaowing until we take him down again. Up to now (fingers crossed) the cats have always landed safely. How do they do it? - it's quite easy - isn't it Nera?

Deutsch: Das ist unsere Katze Nera auf dem Kleiderschrank, etwas 2 Meter hoch. Beide meine Katzen schlafen gerne dort oder ziehen sich zurück von die Menschen. Meine blinde Katze Grögu war auch gerne dort oben bevor seine Unfall. Ab und zu findet er den Weg oben aber fängt zu miaowen an, bis wir ihn wieder unten nehmen. Bis jetzt (Finger gekreuzt) die Katzen sind immer sicher gelanded. Wie machen sie es? - es ist gang einfach - nicht wahr Nera?

Nera: No problem. First of all I jump up onto the desk - this photo is on my way down, but just imagine I am pointing in the other direction. I have to be careful walking over the desk as the computer keyboard and other human rubbish gets in my way. Now on the left you can see the corner of a television.

Deutsch: Nera: Keine Problem. Erstens springe ich auf dem Pult - diese Foto ist auf dem Rückweg, aber stellt euch vor ich laufe in die andere Richtung. Ich muss immer aufpassen auf dem Pult, weil oft die Computer Tastatur und andere menschliche Abfall kommt mir im Weg. Jetzt auf die linke Seite sieht euch die Ecke einer Fernsehen.

From the desk it is only a short distance to the television. A skilled cat like myself can always jump gracefully onto the top of the screen. Now it starts getting a bit tricky. Note the cupboard on the lefthand side.

Deutsch: Von dem Pult ist es nur eine kurze Distanz zum Fernsehen. Eine geübte Katze wie ich kann immer springen mit Leichtfertigkeit zum Bildschirm. Jetzt kann es etwas knifflig werden. Merkt euch die Schrank auf die linken Seite.

And there I am with a light spring from the television to the top of this smaller cupboard ready for the next jump.

Deutsch: Und da bin ich mit eine leichter Sprung von die Fernsehen zum kleinere Schrank, bereit für meine nächste Durchbruch.

And here I am almost at my goal - the cushion at the end of the wardrobe with a view over the complete territory. Sometimes my sister Tabby gets that cushion first and then I have to make do with one of the others or I tell her to move on, after all I was the first born of us two.

Deutsch: Und hier bin ich fast am Ziel - die Kissen am Ende der Schrank mit Aussicht über die ganze Territorium. Ab und zu meine Schwester Tabby ist schon auf diese Kissen und denn ich muss mich zufrieden stellen mit ein andere Kissen oder ich sagte sie, dass sie muss weiterziehen - schliesslich bin ich die Erstgeborene.

It's easy when you are such a gifted, intelligent, clever cat like myself - and after all I have the looks to go with it.

Deutsch: Es ist ganz einfach wenn man ein solches begabt, intelligent, kluges Katz ist wie ich - und ich sehe auch noch gut aus.

So that was Nera, her usual modest self, telling us how she manages to get to the top of the cupboard - Nera stop hissing, you know that any cat can do it, for a cat nothing special. So now roll up, close your eyes and have a cat nap.

Too many Cars spoil the Frog's chance of survival - Amphibienzugstelle

I was driving home one evening and noticed that this small road was being boarded off at 05.30 in the evening stopping any traffic going through. I don't need the road as I branch off towards the right. The road leads to our next village Riedholz which is very much connected to where I live. When I got home I asked Mr. Swiss what was actually going on and he showed me a pamphlet we had received.

Deutsch: Ich war auf dem Heimweg am Abend und merkte das diese kleine Strasse war gesperrt um 05.30 Abends, dass keine Verkehr durchfahren könnte. Ich brauche diese Strasse nicht, weil ich schon vorher rechts abbiegen. Die Strasse führt zu die nächster Dorf, Riedholz, was in engen Nachbarschaft liegt zu die Dorf wo ich wohne. Wenn ich zu Hause ankam, ich fragte mein Mann was eigentlich los war und er zeigte mich ein Blatt von die Gemeinde.

And it went on - also this year the environment commission together with the Riedholz council will close the Riedholz street from time to time to enable the amphibia to cross the road in safety. During this time the traffic will be redirected through the Längweg. The usual ban on using this road will be removed during this time. It then went on to explain that in the area of this road there is a large movement of amphibia at this time of the year - especially toads, alpine newts, and some frogs. The move from the "Biedermanns pit" southwards to the forest pond "Inseli". According to the amount and year, a lot of amphibia are victims of the road. Efforts are being made to find a permanent solution keeping costs, animal welfare and usefulness in proportion. A road blockage is necessary to be able to compare the results with last year at the end of the spawning season. As the amphibien movements are very much dependent on the temperature and humidity the dates of the main moving nights cannot be exactly forecasted.

I would just add that I have permission to drive through the Langweg. It belongs to the castle park, but because I live in the village I have a special sticker on the front window showing my permission.

Auch dieses Jahr will die Umweltkommission in Zusammenarbeit mit den Riedhölzler Behörden die Riedholzstrasse periodisch sperren um den Amphibien den ungehinderten Übergang zu sichern. Wenn die riedholzstrasse ab Kreuzung Schloss Waldess gesperrt ist, wird der Verkehr über den Längweg umgeleitet. Das entsprechende Fahrverbot wird jeweils aufgehoben.

Nicht staunen an meine plötzlich superdeutsch - ich habe es abgeschrieben. Ich möchte nur sagen das für diese Langweg habe ich Fahrbewilligung, weil ich wohne in Dorf und darf durch die Schlosspark fahren.

Nachher geht es weiter. Im Bereich der Riedholzstrasse befindet sich eine grosse Amphibienzugstelle. Jährlich ziehen die Amphibien (vor allem Erdkröten, Bergmolche und teilweise Grasfrösche) in unterschiedlichen Intensitäten aus dem Bereich der "Biedermannsgrübe" in südlicher Richtung zum Waldweiher "Inseli (Laichgewässer). Je nach Intensität und Jahr werden teilweise sehr viele Amphibien Opfer des Strassenverkehrs. Wir streben eine dauerhafte Lösung an. Tierschutz, Nutzen, Kosten usw. müssen aber verhältnismässig sein. Als Massnahme wird auch dieses Jahr eine temporäre Strassensperre mit Erfolgskontrolle notwendig, damit am Ende der Laichsaison ein Vergleich mit den letztjährigen Resultaten gezogen werden kann. Um die Beobachtungen über die hauptzugstellen, das Tierverhalten usw. zu machen, muss die Riedholzstrasse temporär, wahrend der Hauptzugnächte, gesperrt werden. Da der Amphibienzug sehr stark von der Temperature und der Feuchtigkeit abhängig ist, können die Daten dieser Hauptzugnächte aber nicht genauer vorausgesagt werden.

No it is not a 1st April advanced joke, but this is actually happening. On one side of this road there is a pond, very green and slimy and the frogs love it. Seems to be an ideal maternity pond, but to get there the frogs have to cross the road to get to the other side and our local town council are being helpful. So if you are ever driving through the Swiss countryside at this time of the year, you don't only have to be careful for cats, but also frogs.

Deutsch: Nein, es ist nicht ein 1st April vorzeitige Witz, aber es findet tatsächlich statt. Auf die eine Seite der Strasse ist ein Weiher, sehr grün und mit ziemlich viel Schleim und die Frösche haben es sehr gern. Scheint ein idealer Entbindungsstation zu sein. So wenn sie irgendeinmal durch die Schweizer Landschaft fahren um diese Jahreszeit, muss man nicht nur auf die Katzen aufpassen, aber auch die Frösche.

Barbapapa and some other childhood memories

Now I wonder how many remember the Barbapapa. Those with younger children in the 60's-70's might. My kids loved them. I had two aged around 6 & 7 years old and my first baby had just arrived. The Swiss tv brought the childrens 15 minutes every evening around seven o'clock and once a week the Barbapapa were on the air. I loved those colourful versatile figures. There was a complete family. They were the idea of a French architect student Annette Tison and an American biology teacher Talus Taylor. They were the children's programmes that were for children. I was never a friend of telly tubbies and what they develop today. I think the last children's tv personality I liked was the cookie monster in Sesame Street.

Deutsch: Ich frage micht wie viele sich erinnern an die Barbapapa. Die mit jüngere Kinder in die 60-70ge Jahren veilleicht. Meine Kind liebte sie. Ich hätte 2 Kinder 6 & 7 Jahre alt und meine erste kleine war gerade geboren. Die Schweizer tv brachte die Kinder 15 Minuten um 7.00 Uhr jede Abend und einmal in der Woche war die Barbapapa daran. Ich liebte diese farbige wechselhafte Figuren. Es war ein komplette Familie. Sie waren die Idee ein französische Architektur Studentin Annette Tison und ein amerikanische Biologielehrer Talus Taylor. Sie waren Kinder programme für Kinder. Ich war nie ein Freundin von Telly Tubbies und was sich heute entwickelt wird. Ich glaube die letzter Kinder tv Kreatur das Ich mochte war die Krümmelmonster von Sesame Strasse.

Of course, I grew up with Bill and Ben and Little Weed. Perhaps it wasn't so advisable for learning the local language, but they were fun. Ben said something like "globalop" Bill said also "globalop" and if Little Weed was awake (she lived between the two flowerpots where Bill and Ben lived) she would join in the merry intelligent conversation saying in a high pitched voice "Little weeeeed" - see for yourself.

Deutsch: Natürlich ich wuchs auf mit Bill und Ben und Little Weed (kleine Unkraut). Vielleicht war es nicht so gut für die Sprache zu lernen, aber sie sind lustig gewesen. Ben sagte etwas wie "globalop", Bill sagte auch "globalop" und wenn kleine Unkraut wach war (sie wohnte zwischen die 2 Blumentopf wo Bill und Ben wohnte) sie wude auch mitmachen in die lustige intelligente Unterhaltung und in ein höhe Stimme sagte "Little weeeed" - Schau doch selber.

Perhaps not so intelligent, but it did no harm and I still look back with fond memories to Bill and Ben. Telly Tubbies - forget them - Bill and Ben were nature pure. So if you want to make sure your children grow up with some interllectual training the just show them a few of these. And now to draw to a conclusion, the ones that started my thoughts. The Barbapapa introduction - in original French as the English version just wasn't recorded so well. Who cares you don't have to understand, everything is so self explanatory.

Deutsch: Vielleicht nicht so Intelligent, aber es war harmlos und ich schaue immer noch zurück mit schöne Erinnerungen zu Bill und Bed. Telly Tubbies - vergiss es - Bill und Ben war Natur pur. So wenn Ihr wollt das euer Kinder erwachsen wird mit ein interllectuelle training, zeiget euch ein paar von diese. Und jetzt für ein gute Ende, die was meine Gedanke in Gang gebracht haben. Die Barbapapa Intro - in original französisch. Die deutsche Version war nicht zu finden und die englische nicht ein gute Aufnahme. Wer kummert es wenn man es nicht versteht. Alles ist so Klar.

West Ham won the cup on 02.05.1964

I have done many things in my lifetime up to now, but between the years of about 1959 - 65 I was a very enthusiastic football fan. My dad grew up with West Ham United so the choice was obvious. Although my best friend at school (an all girls grammar school) was in the position that her father was a fan of Leyton Orient. She is still my best friend today and also godmother to my youngest - so we see each other at least once a year. Either she visits me in Switzerland or I see her when I visit my dad in London. To save money we would walk from Mile End, where my friend lived, to Brisbane Road along the River Lea. West Ham was a bit further so we took the underground to Upton Park. This naturally lead to the reason why, when I was younger, I was often to be found at Brisbane Road watching Leyton Orient - and another week my friend would accompany me to the Boleyn to watch West Ham United. We collected newspaper articles, we both had subscriptions of the Charlie Buchan football monthly, and every Christmas the Charlie Buchan football annual was on the list as a present. Unfortunately my scrap books and monthlys disappeared when my parents moved from Bethnal Green to Dagenham, but a few books remained which I found with some pictures.

The text speaks for itself under the photo. Actually I took the picture from an article about Dennis Law who was then the start of Huddersfield. I believe he went on to Manchester City afterwards and is still around today pulling his senior citizenship pension. This photo also shows Andy Malcolm and John Bond of West Ham United.

My favourite of that time (I mean we women did not only look at the ball, but also other things) was definitely Noel Dwyer the Irish international goalie that played for West Ham. I think we didn't only stand behind the goal because it was cheaper but for other reasons as well. The manager of the team was Ted Fenton and I think he was at least 10 years with them. I remember he wrote a book "At Home with the Hammers" which I naturally bought, but I believe a year after he was no longer at home with the Hammers. I remember my dad telling me that Benny Fenton, his brother, went to his school at Bridge Road in Stratford, although I am not sure of the actual facts.

Talking of my dad's younger days, he did actually grow up in Stratford and on 03.05.1964, the day after West Ham had won the cup, he decided to go down to Stratford in the morning to see the team "bring the cup home" and naturally his daughter went with him. I was then 18 years old, but can remember it as if it was yesterday. There were crowds of people lining the road and an open coach came with the team proudly holding the cup. Afterwards they were to be seen on a balcony somewhere along the road. When the procession was over, my dad decided to use the opportunity to go to his former local pub and see if any of his friends were still around. So we went in the pub and my dad asked the barman whether this or the other was still here. The barman said if my dad would like to wait a few minutes they would turn up, and surely enough after the five minute wait I found myself in a circle of about 10 men with their wives all greeting my dad after so long, and all talking about the match - of course. They are sort of memories that stay with you.

And yet another picture of Dwyer, this time watching as the ball goes in. Noel Cantwell tried to stop the ball going into the net, but with no success. Noel Cantwell was the other Irishman in the team at the time, also captain of the Irish National team, and a full back, together with Bond who is also watching helplessly.

Actually at that time football seem to be so logical. You had 11 men each one with a no. The goalie nearly always wore a green knitted pullover and had no no. on his back. He did not need one. You had two full backs, No. 2 on the right and No. 3 on the left. Then the half field, No. 4 on the right, No. 5 the center half (which I believe is now known as a libero) and No. 6 on the left. Nos. 7-11 were all in the front from right to left and No. 9 was the center forward. They were good days where you knew where they belonged. The Italians (or was it the South Americans) came along with a 4-2-4 and later even that got out of date, and to be quite honest I still like to watch a good match on the tv but now they run around with numbers on their back which seem to approach the 20's or the 30's. I supposed it is all for a good cause, but it is not like it used to be.

And who do we have here again. Dwyer laying in the mud watching the ball go in. I am not sure but that could be a young Bobby Moore (although I think it might be a player called Grice) also laying on the ground and definitely Ken Brown doing a delicate dance with the ball going past his behind part.

The SHP on the shirts were written on by me, my friend and I always did that on the photos because it meant "seen him play". These are 4 new players in the national team, probably around 1960. Ron Springett played a few games as goalie for England. He was with Sheffield Wednesday. I didn't know Ray Parry so well, but next to him is Ken Brown the West Ham centre half. On the right is Joe Baker who played for Hibernian, a Scottish team. If I remember rightly he was born just over the borders of Scotland in England, was a very good player and did not qualify for the Scottish team, being born in England. I think he was the only international that England had that spoke with a Scottish accent. Probably if he had been asked, he would rather have played for Scotland.

I think this is one blog that I could go on for ages about. A lot of memories have come flooding back. It was a good time for football, the players worked for their money, didn't get married to famous singers or film stars (except for Billy Wright who married one of the Beverly Sisters). They had a set wage of twenty pounds per week, probably with a few bonuses, but not the ridiculous sums that are paid today. Of course it was cheap labour, and a little bit more was ok, but you can go too far.

By the way did I mention that I saw Bobby Moore play his first game in the first team for West Ham. And when I would come home from games at school with my friend we used to walk pass the"The Spotted Dog", a pub around Essex way. They had a sports ground and Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, who were just coming out of the junior team, were often seen having a football practice there. So I will now close my blog down football memory lane with a photo of West Ham team 1960.

The Reptile Exhibition

This exhibition was the main reason why I left my comfortable home on Sunday afternoon to go to Biel. I saw the poster in the village where I work and realised it would be a good chance to take some photos of something else other than my cats. Mr. Swiss decided it was a good idea so we both went. It was being held in the Pavillion. In 2002 Biel was one of the places for the Expo, the Swiss national exposition and this building was one of the remainders. We did not know where it was exactly so walked passed it, but Mr. Swiss asked a lady and she told us where it was. It was not free, of course, nothing is these days and the entrance cost CHF 16.00. I suppose you have to pay for the live mice that the snakes are fed on.

Deutsch: Diese Austellung war der Hauptgrund warum ich meine bequeme Wohnung verliess am Sonntag Nachmittag für nach Biel zu gehen. Ich sah der Poster in der Dorf wo ich arbeite und realisierte, dass es war ein gute Gelegenheit für Fotos zu machen, etwas anders als meine Katzen. Herr Schweizer hat auch beschlossen mitzugehen. Es fand statt in der Pavillion. In 2002 Biel war eine von der Ortschaften für der Expo, die Schweizer National Exposition und diese Gebäude war ein Überbleibsal. Wir wussten nicht genau wo es war, und deshalb sind wir vorbei gelaufen, aber Herr Schweizer hat eine Dame gefragt und sie sagte wo es ist. Die Ausstellung war nicht gratis, natürlich, nichts ist gratis heute, und die Eintritt kostete CHF 16.00. Ich nehme an man muss bezahlen für die lebendige Mäusefutter für die Schlangen.

There were enough people there, but not too many, so I had a enough opportunity to take my 57 photos. Again a mixed bunch of visitors, half speaking German and the other half French. There was plenty to see. The spiders seemed to be especially popular with the children, which was a bit of a nuisance for such a "professiona"l photographer like me. By the time I got to the small spider tanks, they had hidden theirselves away from the excited screams of the kids, in French and German, so the only ones I could take a photo of were these.

Deutsch: Es war genügend Leute da, aber nicht zu viel, und ich hätte eine gute Gelegenheit mein 57 Fotos zu machen. Wieder eine gemischte Besucherzahl, die Hälfte deutschsprechend und die andere Hälfte französisch. Es war viel zu sehen. Die Spinne scheint besonders populär zu sein mit die Kinder. Das war nicht so gut für ein solche "professional" Fotograf wie ich. Wenn ich endlich an die kleine Spinne behalter kam, sie haben sich versteckt von die Geschrei die Kinder, auf französisch und deutsch, so die einizige Spinne ich fand war diese.

There was really a lot to see and we must have been in the Exhibition more than an hour. My problem was knowing what I had photographed. Of course all the cages were marked with the type of reptile and where it would live if it was free, but I didn't really want to make a list. On the way out I asked one of the persons at the exit if he had any literature, but he looked at me with a sort of blank look. I then said "vous parlez français" and his face lit up but he had no literature about the snakes etc. so I found a few things on Internet and wrote it on the photos.

Deutsch: Es war wirklich viel zu sehen und wir sind sicher mehr als eine Stund in der Ausstellung gewesen. Meine Problem war zu wissen was ich fotographiert habe. Natülich die Käfige war markiert mit der Reptilientypus und wo es wohnte wäre es frei, aber ich wollte keine Liste schreiben. Bei der Ausgang ich fragte eine von der Austellungsleute ob er Literature über die Reptilien hätte, aber er schaute micht an mit ein komische Blick. Ich sagte "vous parlez français?" und seine Gesicht leuchtet auf, aber er hat keine Literture über die Schlangen usw. so ich fand ein paar Sachen in Internet um die Fotos zu bennen.

Luckily there were about 3 restaurants nearbye, so when we finished our visit we had a coffee to recover from the stress. We could even sit outside as it was really a warm afternoon. We had about a 10 minute walk to the car.

Deutsch: Zum Glück war etwa 3 Restaurant in der Nähe, so wenn wir fertig waren mit unsere Besuch wir nahmen ein Kafee als Erholung von der Stress. Wir könnten sogar draussen sitzen, weil es war wirklich ein warme Nachmittag. We hätten etwa 10 Minuten zu laufen zum Auto.

A visit to Biel /Bienne

After our 30 minute journey on the motorway we arrived at the town of Biel (Bienne in French). The photo shows the approach road. Biel is really almost on the language border, they say 60% Swiss German, 40% French, but I always seem to meet the French speaking people when I am there. If you look carefully you can see that the back part of the town is sort of built on a slope. The town is at the beginning of the seven ranges of the Jura mountains. The town is growing and building is going on. It always seem to me the higher up you lived, the more expensive the property.

Deutsch: Nach unserem 30 Minuten Reise auf der Autobahn wir sind in der Stadt Biel angekommen (auf französisch Bienne). Die Foto zeigt die Eingangsstrasse. Biel ist eigentlich fast auf die Sprachgrenze, sie saged 60% Schweizerdeutsch, 40% Französisch, aber ich treffe fast immer nur französisch sprechende Leute wenn ich da bin. Wenn man genau hinschaut sieht man in die hintere Teil das es auf ein Neigung gebaut ist. Die Stadt ist an die erste Kette von die sieben Kette der Jura. Die Stadt wachst und es wird gebaut. Es scheint mich immer das je höher man wohnt je teuerer die Besitz.

The town has changed over the last 35 years that I have known it through visits. The original wealth was from the Swiss Watch industry. This area was the centre spreading down towards Grenchen. Over the years watch making became automatic, the Swatch was invented and people basically are not interested in the Swiss craftsmanship of a watch with an inside that moves to the rhythm of the ticking. Watch cases are imported from the Far East, and the works run on a battery - they don't tick anymore. So the watch industry gradually receded in Biel. Large engineering companies such as Mikron - now Agie Charmilles - can still be found in the area. Many of the watch factories no longer exists and have been built to contain supermarkets or furniture shops. There was a time when every year you knew it was watch makers holiday time, the end of July usually. Then everything was closed in the area, people were then on holiday. When I started working in Solothurn we always had our annual holidays at this time. The watchmakers school was in Solothurn and Roamer watches were also made in Solothurn. The people living in the Jura mountains behind Biel existed from the watch making business and there are still a couple of small factories left.

Deutsch: Die Stadt hat sich verändert über die letzter 35 Jahre das ich es kenne. Das Geld war von die Schweizer Uhrenindustrie. Es streckt sich von Biel gegen Grenchen. Über die jahren Uhren wurde automatisch. Der Swatch war entwickelt und Leute interessiert sich nicht mehr so viel für die Schweizer Handwerkerkunst. Die Uhren tickte nicht mehr, Uhren "cases" war importiert von der Fernost und läufte auf Batterie - sie haben nicht mehr getickt. Die Uhrenindustrie in Biel ging zurück. Grössere Firmen wie Mikron - heute Agie Charmilles - findet man immer noch in biel. Viele Uhrenfabriken sind jetzt umgewandelt in Supermarkt oder Möbelgeschafte, Man wusste fruher wann Uhrenmacherferien war, Ende Juli, denn war alles zu in der Gegend. Zu der Zeit dass ich zu arbeiten anfing, wir haben immer unsere Sommerferien zu diese Zeit gehabt in Solothurn. Die Uhrenmacherschule und Roamer Uhren was in Solothurn zu finden. Die Leute in die Dörfer in die Jura hinten Biel existierte von die Unrenmacher Industrie und es hat noch ein paar Fabriken noch da.

The town still has a lively shopping centre with many cafés. We were there on Sunday so it was quiet. The only traffic you find in the town centre is the bus. Cars are not allowed. Again you can see the slope in the background with houses. Biel has an atmosphere that you very rarely find. A combination of the Swiss German way of life and the Swiss Romande which works perfectly in the town. My son lived here for a couple of years and felt very much at home. He spoke almost only French at his workplace, but otherwise German with the people he knew. The Bieler people do grow up with two languages.

Deutsch: Der Stadt hat ein ziemlich lebendige Einkaufszentrum mit viele Café. Wir waren dort am Sonntag und deshalb war es ruhig. Die einzige Verkehr ist der Bus in die Stadtzentrum, Autos sind nicht erlaubt. Nochmals sieht man die Neigung in der Hintergrund mit Häuser. Biel hat ein atmosphäre das man selten findet. Eine Mischung von Deutschschweizer Leben und Romande Schweizer, welche geht sehr gut in diese Stadt. Mein Sohn wohnte hier für ein paar Jahre und fühlte sich sehr zu Hause. Er sprach fast nur französich in seine Arbeitsplatz, aber sonst deutsch mit die Leute er kannte. Die Biele Leute wachsen auf mit zwei Sprachen.

Biel also has a lake. I did not have time to go there on my visit, but another time. If you happen to be lucky (and wealthy) you might live on the shores of the Lake. It is an area for boating, and fishing. You can take the boat from the town of Solothurn down the River Aare to the town of Biel where the Aare meanders into the lake.

Deutsch: Biel hat auch ein See. Ich habe keine Zeit gehabt das Mal, aber ein andere Mal. Wenn man Glück hat (und auch Vermögen) kann man auf die See Ufer wohnen. Es ist ein Platz für Schiffahrt und fischen. Man kann das Boot nehmen von Solothurn entlang die Fluss Aare nach Biel, wo die Fluss in der Aare geht.

An Afternoon out - Ein Nachmittag Ausflug

Today was such a nice day, a bit of a cold wind but otherwise sunshine all day. In the near by town of Biel there is a reptile exhibition and I decided it would be worth a visit. Biel is about 25 kilometers away and used to be a half hours drive. Since the new motorway has been built it only takes twenty minutes if the going is good. Generally we have got very lazy in our older years, taking it easy at week-end. It is so nice to read a book, the newspaper and go for a walk locally. I work during the week (Mr. Swiss - retired, lucky man) so I only have the opportunity to go anyway at the week-end. We spent the morning as usual - at least the cats did.

Deutsch: Heute war schön, ein wenig kalt aber sonst Sonne die ganze Tag. In der Nähe in Stadt Biel war ein Reptilien Ausstellung und ich enschied es war ein Besuch wert. Biel is ungefähr 25 Kilometer weit weg und war früher ein halb Stund zu fahren. Seit die neue Autobahn existiert es braucht nur etwa 20 Minuten wenn keine Verkehr. In Allgemein sind wir etwas faul geworden in unserem Älter, und am Wochenend besonders. Es ist schön ein Buch zu lese, die Zeitung durchzublättern oder ein Spaziergang zu machen. Ich arbeitete durch die Woche (Herr Schweizer in der Ruhestand - glücklicher Man) so ich habe die Gelegenheit nur am Wochenende etwas zu unternehmen. Wir verbrachte die Morgen wie immer - d.H. die Katze.

They asked politely if they could go out and enjoy the sunshine after a mad ten minutes at home chasing each other all over the place and we decided for the sake of peace they could wear theirselves out outside.

Deutsch: Sie fragten höfflich, ob sie draussen spielen könnte und die Sonne geniessen nachdem sie haben ein verruckte Zehnminuten verbracht, wo sie einander durch die Wohnung gejagt haben. Wir entschieden das es ruhiger wäre, wenn sie draussen gingen.

I told Mr. Swiss I wouldn't mind going to Biel in the afternoon and he found it was a good idea and we would go by car. If I had gone on my own, I would have taken the train and I don't like driving long distances on roads I don't know. The motorway to Biel had only been finished just a bit more than a year ago, and I didn't even know where it started in Solothurn. It was quite a complex thing to build, and three new bridges had to be constructed for the connecting roads to the villages and towns. It also meant that a by pass road had to be made around the town of Solothurn, meaning that our building site was the second biggest to the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin when they were constructing the new capital city of Germany after the reunification.

Deutsch: Ich sagte Herr Schweizer ich würde gern nach Biel gehen am Nachmittag und er fand es wäre ein gute Idee und wir würden fahren mit dem Auto. Wenn ich alleine ging, hätte ich dem Zug genommen, weil ich nicht gern lange Distanz fahren auf die Strassen, die ich nicht kenne. Der Autobahn nach Biel war nur fertig geworden seit etwa mehr als ein Jahr und ich wusste nichteinmal, wo es in Solothurn anfing. Es war siemlich ein komplexe Sache zu bauen und drei Brücken müssten gebaut werden für die Zubringerstrassen von Dörfer und Städte. Ein Umfahrung musste auch gebaut worden um Solothurn herum. Ein Zeit lang war Stadt Solothurn die zweit grösste Bauplatz in Europe, die am Potsdamer Platz Berlin die grösste.

This is one of the new bridges over the River Aare near the small town of Grenchen, half way between Solothurn and Biel. They also had to make a few tunnels as the new motorway went through a lot of farm land where there were a lot of wild animals, deers, rabbits etc. and the farmers were not to happy about having a smelly motorway running parallel to the fields. Of course all this tunnelling made everything more expensive, but we are in Switzerland where we all pay income tax to cover the costs.

Deutsch: Hier ist eine von die neue Brücken über die Fluss Aare in der Nähe von die kleine Stadt Grenchen, halbwegs zwischen Solothurn und Biel. Ein paar Tunnel musste man auch bauen. Die Autobah ging durch viele Landwirtschaftliche Betriebe, wo es wilde Tiere wie Reh, Hasen usw. hat und die Bauern war nicht so glücklich eine stinkende Autobahn zu haben parallel zu den Felden. Natürlich diese Tunnels machte alles etwas teuer, aber wie sind in der Schweiz wo wir alle Steuer bezahlen für die Kosten zu decken.

The tunnels are quite long, but well built and wide enough. We were lucky today as there was not a lot of traffic.

Deutsch: Die Tunnel sind lang, aber gut gebaut und breit genug. Wir hätten heute Glück, weil es hat nicht so viel Verkehr.

Eventually we came off the motorway and arrive at the entrance to the town of Biel. On the right you can see the continuation of part of the motorway which goes into the Jura mountains leading to the French speaking part of Switzerland, connecting to the town of Délémont amongst others. My chauffeur drove quite well and I took all the photos from the car, so you might see a bit of window in the photos.

Deutsch: Endlich kamen ab von die Autobahn und an die Eingang zu Stadt Biel. Auf die rechte Seize sieht man die Autobahn, welche in die Jura Berge fuhrt zu der franzözisch sprechende Teil von der Schweiz, gegen Stadt Délémont unter anderem. Meine chauffeur fährte ziemlich gut und ich habe die Fotos augenommen von die Auto, so es kann sein, das ein Teil von Autofenster ist auf die Fotos.
